Elected to office on the 13th November 2017, Musa Beihi Abdi is the current President of Somaliland and the leader of the Peace, Unity and Development Party. His Excellency was born in 1948 and attended primary school in Hargeisa and subsequently attended the revered Amoud Secondary school in Borama. As one of the top achievers in his year’s GCC exams in the country, he was among a group of high achievers selected to go to the former USSR to study aeronautics in Gagarin Air Force Academy. As well as later receiving training at the Fort Lee Military Academy in Virginia, USA. His Excellency then went on to rise through the ranks of the then Somali Air Force, eventually gaining the rank of Colonel. In 1985, he left his post as Military Attaché at the Embassy of Somalia in Washington to join the revolutionary Somali National Movement (SNM) in their long struggle that culminated in successful ousting of the then regime.
After the rebirth of Somaliland, His Excellency played a big role in the reconciliation processes of Somaliland’s clans. In 1993, His Excellency served as the Minister of Interior and National Security in the Egal administration. He is noted for being on the frontline of clan reconciliations and rebuilding Somaliland.
In 2010, His Excellency Musa Beihi was appointed the chairman of the Peace, Unity and Development Party. In 2015, he was selected as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2017 Elections. Having won with a significant majority His Excellency President Musa Beihi was inaugurated on December 13th 2017.
His Excellency also obtained a Master’s Degree in Conflict Resolution from the faculty of Peace and Conflict Studies of the University of Hargeisa. He is fluent in English, Arabic and Russian. President Musa Beihi Abdi is a seasoned politician and a true Somaliland Hero. He has a shining political track record in the Somali political scene and a colourful history full of patriotism and bravery.
